Dollarhide’s Whip
Acrylic on wood panel, 10 x 10in, Ampersand panel frame (walnut.)
A derelict car. Left for dead in a broken relationship. You are cheaper to burn than to care for.

We were young and dumb. True story.
I initially wanted a tighter hard surface for the car so I started with a mechanical pencil on transfer paper. What I realized as the shading and forms developed is that it was cool but not in keeping with my vocabulary. I started finding larger, weirder shapes in the drawing. I got loose and a little sloppy in places. I gave it some personality.
This painting started as a palette next to me at my easel. I used a palette knife to wipe extra paint onto the gesso for texture and color. Using it as car rust and Bondo patina was such a fun idea.
