Heart of Gold

16 x 16in acrylic & gold leaf on wood

I recently wrapped a commission inspired by A Flight and a Crash. I decided to create a spiritual companion piece to that painting, expanding on the original’s narrative, punching up the color, and painting something in line with my newer series of work.

The original painting features a similar cast of characters; a hollow hero, his heart, plant-life, and a horizon. In this new painting I wanted to build on the original story of a “broken man spilling his guts” with the addition of “positive” energy coming specifically from his heart. I cleaned up the less important organ meat, added the sweet white lightning, modernized the original’s color palette, & added some mind-waves/ creativity radiating from the cracked noggin.

I think there are a couple ways to read this image;

  1. A broken man, giving you all he’s got, rising above in the end.

  2. This dude’s positive mental attitude and heart are so intense, they have shattered his physical shell of a body and fertilized the plants around him.

  3. A cool red guy, getting blasted by lightning, ascending.

I’m happy to let you, the viewer, choose which one you prefer :)
